The Umbrian Forest can be found on the Gargano promontory, inside the Gargano National Park. The area has an uneven orography and the altitude decreases when travelling moving southward. The landscape is a patchwork of rock outcrop formations and small depressions known as ‘cutini’ where rainwater collects. It rests on a substratum of dolostones and grey limestone which date to the Cretaceous period, and the area is made up of much evolved brown forest soil. Within the forest is a visitor centre with a diorama displaying the Gargano.
