The Scaligeri cemetery is protected by a beautiful wrought iron gate, decorated with the coat of arms of the Scala family who were the lords of Verona in the middle ages. Their tombs, perhaps the most distinguished monuments of Gothic art in Verona, are known as ‘Arche Scaligere’ and are covered by elaborate canopies. Each monument is topped by the statue of the lord resting in it. The Cansignorio Arch of 1375 was built by Bonino da Campione, who chose to use a particularly intricate design incorporating a magnificent baldachin supported by six twisted pillars.
