The impressive entrance to Verona’s Monumental Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale) is reached via an avenue of trees. Giuseppe Barbieri chose the Neo-Doric style for his design in 1828 complete with striking sculptures, said to have been inspired by the work of Antonio Canova. Artists were certainly at work too in the design and execution of the monuments; the Bertani tomb, by Spazzi, the Dolci tomb by Ettore Ferrari and the Monga tomb by Giovanni Dupre are all worthy of note.
