The church of Santo Stefano is thought to be the oldest in the city of Verona. It was built at the request of the Scaglieri in the 12th Century in the spot where a 6th Century oratory stood. It was once the city’s cathedral and the first bishops of Verona were buried here. The façade is decorated with paintings each side of the entrance. There are three naves inside and a crypt that dates to the 10th Century. In the Chapel of the Innocent it is said that there are four children buried who were killed by Herod in Bethlehem.
