The church of Santa Maria della Reggia was begun in the second half of the 16th Century. This unusual looking building is built on an octagonal plan and topped with a lovely cupola – the architects were Galeazzo Alessi and Giulio Danti. This is the principle church of Umbertide and is sometimes known as ‘La Collegiata’. On the inside visitors can see paintings by Pomarancio. On the tambour (the wall beneath the dome) is a particularly fine piece, the Ascension to Heaven, painted in 1578.
