Built in the 9th Century, Saint Mark’s Basilica is a splendid example of Eastern and Byzantine architectural influence. The church is lavish in its display of gold and silver work, paintings and precious stones. The magnificent domes are 12th century and the church’s interior has 13th and 14th Century mosaics which depict phases of the Bible. Unfortunately, because of the volume of visitors only part of Saint Mark’s Basilica is open to tourists.
