This church was erected as a Benedictine monastery in 1046 and in 1442 belonged to the Venetian Friars of S. Georgia in alga. The present structure took shape in 1477; Sanmicheli finished the presbytery, dome and bell tower. The façade is white marble and inside the church has some remarkable 16th Century paintings by Venetian masters. These include: ‘Martyrdom of St. George’ by Veronese, and the ‘Baptism of Christ’ and ‘Pentecoste’ by Tintoretto. Over the main altar is a copy of Veronese’s ‘Miracolo di S. Barnaba’, as the original is now in the Louvre in Paris thanks to Napoleon’s looting.
