The church of S. Fermo Maggiore was home to the Benedictines but was taken over by the Franciscans in 1260. It is made up of two buildings on top of each other with three naves and five apses. Construction was started in 1065 and included the bell tower. It was built by the monks on the site of an ancient chapel that housed the relics of S. Fermo and S. Rustico. The front of the church was completed in 1350 and has been divided into two sections by a partly blind balcony.
