Romeo’s House (Casa di Romeo) may not be an elaborate building but is a must-see for visitors to Verona. The plain 14th Century house, one of the oldest in the city, is claimed by scholars to have belonged to the house of Cagnolo Nogarola. But according to local tradition Casa di Romeo belonged to the Montecchi – or Montague – family and was the home of one half of Shakespeare’s famous lovers. The Gothic styled brick-built house, which looks out over a courtyard, has a fort-like appearance with remnants of its original battlements.
