The Roman Forum (Foro Romano) was situated in Piazza delle Erbe, which was the centre of city life in ancient Verona. It was once very large - 56m x 68m - and rectangular in shape. It was later reduced in size to incorporate the building of the Palazzo del Comune and the Domus Mercatorum. Later additions were the Fountain of the Madonna Verona, the Gothic Market Column (1401) which has the viscount’s insignia, the San Marco Column, and the ’berlina’ - a marble canopy.
