The Porta Nuova in Verona was incorporated into the existing 1531 rampart. It was designed and built by the military architect and engineer, Michele Sanmicheli between 1533 and 1546. In 1854, the Austrians altered the gate by opening up the two side archways as well as completing work on the façade by using tuff, a sort of earthy deposit of volcanic material. There is a fine sculpture of Jupiter’s head on the gate’s keystone.
