As well as the vast Verona Arena, the ancient Romans had a smaller theatre here in a spot which overlooks the River Adige. The 1st Century theatre, with steps built into St Peter’s Hill, was discovered in the 16th Century buried beneath a church and convent and in a perfect alignment with the city’s network of streets. Archaeological excavations began around 1757 and have continued periodically and the arena is reached through a 16th Century building which houses the museum. Today, performances of Shakespeare, ballet and jazz are held here, usually in conjunction with those held at Verona Arena.
