The Monumento alle Vittime del 1915 is a statue of a woman pointing to the sky with a sword. The monument commemorates a tragic event of the First World War and is just to one side of the Piazza delle Erbe. An Austrian aircraft strafed the city centre with machine gunfire in 1915 killing many civilians who were at the market. The Veronese people have never forgotten the attack. The female statue symbolises the ‘city that is in pain but not defeated’ and was erected in 1920.
