La Rocca was erected between 1374 and 1390. It was designed by Angeluccio di Ceccolo, (also known as ‘Trucascio’) and built by Alberto Giudalotti. The attractive fortress is made up of a huge square tower, measuring 40 metres high, with 3 lower crenellated keeps. It was used as a prison from 1818 to 1923 but has since been restored and is now open to the public. Visitors can see everything from the dungeons to the top of the tallest tower. The halls are used for cultural exhibitions and events.
