In Roman times the Bòrsari Gateway was the principal entry point into the city of Verona. It was built in the middle of the 1st Century A.D., and later restored by Gallieno in 265. In the medieval era it was called the San Zeno gateway, but later took its name from the ’bursarii’, (tax collectors) who collected taxes for the bishop. What remains today of the Roman gateway is the external frontage of white Veronese stone, with two double rows of arches, containing six windows each. Each of these is adorned with rich decorative work.
