The Fountain of Madonna Verona, constructed in the female form, dates back to Roman times. The fountain, which was repaired in 1368, is one of the oldest and best-known fountains in the city. The Madonna holds a scroll in her hand bearing the emblem of the city and she sits on a base also of Roman origin on which there are eight sculptured masks from which the water flows. The monument was erected at the wishes of Casignorio della Scala, to celebrate the repair of the city’s aqueduct.
