Il Ponte Scaligero is one of the most photographed bridges in Verona, but actually it is not authentic. The original one was blown up by the Germans during WWII and it was rebuilt in the 1950s. With three arches of decreasing widths, it is a strong brick structure resting on crenellated towers. The original bridge was thought to have been built sometime between 1375 and 1376. The bridge formed part of a complicated defence structure for the Castel Vecchio, and linked the city with the road leading to the Tyrol.
