Volta Mantovana has two convents, both built during the early 17th Century. The Franciscan convent had large rooms accommodating around twenty monks as well as a cloister and a lovely church with fine altars and artwork. The Orsolina convent was built inside the castle walls. This housed twenty nuns who, in 1731, became a cloistered Dominican Order. The convent church, dedicated to San Domenico, was erected in 1626 and restored in the early 18th Century. The convents closed in the late 18th Century; the Dominican convent sold to the Vernier family in 1929, was completely remodelled by Vergani.
