S. Maria Matricolare Duomo was built on the site of the former church after the earthquake of 1117. The huge Roman gateway with its double arches is by Nicolò (1139). Renovation took place in the 15th Century including the buttresses and chapels, and Renaissance features were added in the 16th Century. Inside are 3 naves with pilasters in red marble and more marble is in evidence in the semi-circular door by Michele Sanmichelo (1534). The altar-piece displays the ’Assumption’ by Tiziano (1530), ’Epiphany’ by Liberale da Verona and ‘Transfiguration’ by Giambettino Cignaroli.
