The castle at Volta Mantovana was built before the year 1000 and included in the defence system of the Canossian states. The stronghold defended the northern borders. It has been renovated a number of times by the Gonzaga family, with its present layout being the result of work carried out in the 14th and 15th Century. The castle complex was once surrounded by a moat and contained a church and small community. A watchtower and another tower were situated to the south with other entrances also being fortified, including the ‘Mantua Gate’ with its Gothic arch.
