This is one of the most significant library collections in Europe. Founded in the 5th Century as Scriptorium for the Schola Sacerdotum Sanctae Veronesis Ecclesiae, it contains some 1,500 precious manuscripts, civil and legal documents, parchments and valuable illuminated works. These include things like: the 4th Century ‘Virgilio’, 5th Century legal document ‘Istituzioni di Gaio’, one of St. Augustine’s ‘De civitate Dei’ and the 5th Century ‘Evangeliario purpureo’ which is written in silver and gold. There is also the ‘archivio dei canonici, which consists of over 11,000 parchments, the oldest being from 710.
