The Basilica of St Mark’s (Basilica di S.M. Assunta di Torcello) is the most ancient cathedral of the lagoon in Venice. Building began around 639 and the structure has seen renovation work during the 9th, 11th and 14th centuries. Inside, you can marvel at the sumptuous decoration which includes beautiful mosaic work. Visits to the bell tower is by appointment, but anyone energetic enough to attempt the climb to the top of this 11th Century campanile will be rewarded with a marvellous view.
