The Basilica di S. Maria Assunta on the island of Torcello dates to around the year 1000 and includes elements dating at least 400 years earlier. You can marvel at the beautiful ambo on the left that comprises of certain parts of the original 6th Century church. The brilliance of the mosaics that adorn the apse, along with the images of ‘The Last Judgement’ on the west wall (which is rumoured to be a reconstruction) is quite stunning.
