The Tram di Opicina is a scenic and unusual way to travel to Trieste’s Carso. This old rail system was opened in 1902 and has become part of local folklore, and there are even local traditional songs about it. It is more than just a means of transport, it is a large tourist attraction and represents an important part of the city’s recent history as well as being part of the heart and soul of the city. It leaves from the city centre’s Piazza Oberdan and travels the 5 kilometres up the Scorcola to the town of Obicina.
