The Spanish Steps are situated in a square which takes its name from the Spanish Embassy which once had its headquarters here. Built from 1723 to 1725 and designed by Italian architect Francesco de Sanctis it’s a popular international meeting point. The steps, which lead up to the Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti are the venue for one of the most prestigious fashion shows, the steps themselves being used as the catwalk. The fountain here was commissioned by Urbano Barberini to mark the alliance made with the King of France.
