The amazing monument of the Tempio Malatestiano was based on an earlier structure of the 14th Century Romanesque-Gothic church of San Francesco. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta started the work in 1449, while the architectural part was entrusted to Matteo de’Pasti. Sculpturing was undertaken by Agostino di Duccio and the external architecture was the work of Leon Battistia Alberti. One of the six chapels in its interior houses the ‘Arca degli Antenati dei Discendenti’ created by Agostino di Duccio in which Sigismondo wanted to have united his ancestors and the ancient of the Casata.
