The once very grand Teatro Nuovo was built on a classical seat plan typical of the layout of theatres in Italy. This theatre was made from designs by architect Ireneo Aleandri, the same man who designed the Traversa Interna. The structure took more than 10 years to put together, taking place between 1854 and 1864. It was built over the ruins of a monastery. Today the Teatro Nuovo is the seat of the Fondazione del Festival dei Due Mondi.
