Soleto was once a Messapian town, as is evident from some inscriptions found in a necropolis. There are many interesting things to see here including an important Gothic monument - Raimondello’s Spire, a bell tower built in 1397 by Raimondello del Balzo Orsini, Lord of the town. The church of Santo Stefano was built in the 14th Century in a Romanic style and has some Byzantine frescoes; during this period Greeks settled in Soleto, and there are still some traces of their language in the local dialect.
