The church of Santa Maria della Scala was erected on the site of a church which existed in medieval times. It was built in the 13th Century with a characteristic Gothic interior. There is one nave with an elevated presbytery. Restoration work took place in the 15th Century which included preservation of a bronze statue on the main altar showing the revival of Christ by Vecchietta (1476). This work, inspired by the school of Donatello, is considered by many art experts to be the finest Renaissance sculpture in Siena.
