The Santa Sofia Complex and the Addolorata Church was the first Benedictine Convent dedicated to Saint Sophia towards the end of the 10th Century. For two centuries it was home to monks before being passed to nuns of the same order. The Monastery was entrusted to Jesuit Priests in 1592 to educate young boys. When Pope Clement XVI suppressed the order in 1778 he entrusted the structure to the Carmelites. During the Napoleon requisition of 1807 up to 1938 the convent was used as a civil court.
