Santa Maria di Leuca is located in a beautiful stretch of the peninsula. There are many legends of the place which include pagan gods as well as the Sanctuary of the Virgin. According to one tradition, this place was chosen by Saint Peter, who came here from the east and was so taken with its beauty and charm that he believed it to be the place where people passed when they died. The original name of Santa Maria di Leuca was Leukč, which in Greek means pure light.
