The church of Chiesa di San Silvestro lends its name to the square where it is located. It is sometimes known as ‘in capite’ because of its somewhat gory relic – the head of Saint John the Baptist. Much restoration work has taken place over the centuries including the campanile, which was added in the 13th Century. Maderno and Carlo Rainaldi both contributed to the renovation work here. The elaborately decorated façade with pilaster strips and capitals also incorporates two massive statues.
