The San Rocco Lazaretto in Salò was built by the town in 1484. The building is made up of two storeys with a number of rooms, a chapel and a courtyard. The lazaretto was where people were placed in quarantine by the health authority in order to contain disease, and plague victims were buried in the courtyard. Extra sheds were added to house the ill, those quarantined, and recovering patients. Many people were employed here during the epidemic, including guards, cooks, nurses and a disinfection squad.
