The origins of the church of San Pietro alle Scale have been lost in the mists of time. It is likely to have been built before the end of the 12th Century; it has been extensively renovated at least twice. The 18th Century was probably the last time restoration took place, when the interior was altered. You can still see the original parts of the church and is well worth the visit, even if a lot of the artwork that adorned it has mostly disappeared or has been lost over the centuries.
