The church of San Donato used to take in the pilgrims who were walking to Rome along the Via Francigena. It is one of Siena’s most ancient churches although now it is no longer used as a place of worship. It has become part of the complex of the bank of Monte dei Paschi. The bank houses a wonderful art collection, much of which is kept in the deconsecrated church and is linked by an underground passage.
