The church of San Benedetto was part of the St Benedict Monastery that was founded sometime between the 7th and 9th Century. Traces of an imposing aqueduct that was once joined to the Monastery can still be seen in the Via Arce. The Monastery was destroyed during a Saracen battle in 884, but was rebuilt by Abbot Angelario and became a point of reference in Southern Italy for the religious world. Inside is built to Roman standards on Basilica plans, with three aisles divided by two rows of columns and pillars joined together by arches.
