Salò, once the capital of its own province, has the longest promenade on Lake Garda. The promenade opens out onto the Piazza Dal Vittoria, which is also the boarding place for the ferry, and a lovely town square with plenty of cafes and shops. The area is famed for its fishing, windsurfing, rowing, and yachting, and other facilities include walking, swimming, football, volleyball, basketball and bocce. There is a 15th Century church (S. Bernardino) and the town’s famous son was Gasparo da Salo, the inventor of the violin. A market is held in Salò every Saturday morning.
