The Romano Theatre is a beautiful Roman amphitheatre built around the 1st and 2nd centuries AD by Quinto Petronio Modesto, who was governor under the Emperor Trajan. It was discovered during building works in that part of the city in 1937 and 1939 which was once covered by modern and mediaeval housing. The theatre is sited between the Capitoline hill and Piazza dell’Unita’ and is right in front of the police station; it is worth a visit. In its day it could have seated six thousand spectators on the seats built into the hill leading to San Giusto.
