The Roman amphitheatre, which can be found near the church of San Claudio on the main road to Foligno, dates from the 1st Century AD but little survives. The Roman city was built at a lower level than the later, medieval town, which was constructed on a hill with strategic defences in mind. The amphitheatre once seated 15,000 spectators but now the somewhat overgrown arena ruins are perhaps more impressive when seen from the Belvedere in the city than from ground level.
