Racale is an agricultural centre located at the foot of the Serra dell’ Alto. Thought to be of Roman origins, it was founded by a freedman of Caesar August’s who gave it a coat of arms very similar to that of Rome. Though other sources believe there is a clear reference to the Greek tradition of Salento in its name. If so then it was perhaps founded to celebrate the cult of Hercules. There is plenty to see in Racale and not to be missed is the simple Megalithic turret erected from great stacked stones.
