The Piccolomini Library was founded by Pope Pius III in the late 15th Century. The idea behind it was to house the collection which belonged to his uncle, Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II). The marble façade is by Marrina and the perfectly preserved pictorial work was by Pinturicchio at the beginning of the 16th Century. There are some frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Pius II and one which shows the coronation of Pius III. The illuminated choir books by Liberale da Verona, Girolamo da Verona, Sano di Pietro and others date from between 1469 and 1475.
