Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, President of the Italian Republic, officially opened the Parco del Mercatello on 6th February 1998. It extends over an area of 10 hectares and is one of the largest parks in Italy. It covers three areas, Mariconda, Mercatello and Quartiere Europa and has revitalised these areas that would otherwise have remained mere suburbs. Features of the park are the small river that crosses it, the greenhouses and the rock gardens where you can view cactus donated to the town by the Acquaviva Foundation and the artificial lake and canal.
