The Palazzo of the Magnifica Patria and Palazzo of the Podesta are located on the lakefront between Via Conforti and Piazza della Vittoria. The former was built in 1524; the latter was reconstructed in 1905 after the 1901 earthquake. The ceiling fresco is by G. Andrea Bertanza and the frescoes at the entrance are by Angelo Landi. Beneath the portico joining the two buildings is a coat of arms and memorial stones. One room contains a marvellous bust of Gasparo da Salò by sculptor Angelo Zanelli. Gasparo da Salò, who invented the violin, was born in the town in 1540.
