The Palazzo delle Papesse was built between 1460 and 1495 to a plan by the architect, Bernardo Rossellino. It was designed to be a residence of Catrina, the sister of Pius II. It is said to be ‘the second Palazzo Pubblico’ which was also designed by Rossellino but differs in its rough-cut lower stonework. Inside are some 19th Century frescoes. The palace is home to the city’s contemporary art museum which is laid out over four floors. Visitors to this museum will find a mixture of exhibits from architecture to video.
