The Palazzo del Quirinale was built in the 16th Century. It was custom made for Pope Gregory XIII, who chose the summit of a hill to site his new papal residence. More than one architect contributed to the finished design, including Carlo Maderno who created the chapel, Bernini who took on the work of one of the wings, and Pietro da Cortona who decorated parts of the inside. In later years it became a royal palace, and is now the home of the President of the Republic. The beautiful garden is open to visitors and admission is free.
