The Palazzo del Popolo is said to be one of the most ancient of its kind in Italy, having been built between 1214 and 1228. The style is Lombard-Gothic with later crenellations. The porticoed entrance area leads into the ground floor, which is a hall divided into two naves and once used as a market place. The first floor can be accessed from an external staircase. In this palace are the Sala delle Pietre and the town’s museums. Here, the Museo Lapidario displays fragments of Roman origin and on another floor is the Museo Etrusco-Romano.
