No one could fail to recognise the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele, sited between the Piazza Venezia and Capitoline Hill. It is known locally as the ‘wedding cake’ or the ‘typewriter’ both of which describe its shape very well. Built of white marble and with tall Corinthian columns, fountains and stairways, it’s an impressive structure. The monument holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the base of the building houses the museum of Italian Reunification.
