The Mole Antonelliana in Turin is a rather strange brick-built structure designed by the architect Alessandro Antonelli. It has symbolised the freedom of worship obtained by the city’s Jewish community since 1863. The building has a large square base topped with a dome, and surmounted by a temple with two orders. The spire originally had a winged sprite, later replaced with a star and was rebuilt after it collapsed in 1953. The Mole Antonelliana is over 167 metres high and has become a characteristic feature of Turin.
