Lippo Memmi designed the Mangia Tower in 1341 and it was built by Minuccio and Francesco di Rinaldo by 1348. Topped by a beautiful stone belfry, its bell was used to signal the opening of the city gates at dawn. The present bell dates from 1666. The tower gets its name from the original watchman, Giovanni di Duccio, who was something of a squanderer (mangiaguadagni) and is entered from the internal courtyard of the palace where there’s also an 18th Century statue to him. The effort of climbing the 388 steps is rewarded with a magnificent view from the top.
