The church of Madonna delle Grazie is surrounded by myths and legends. It is said that in 1286 a shepherd carved a Madonna in a tree trunk, but did not manage to complete the face. It was believed angels took on the task and completed the face instead. The finished statue somehow found its way to the sea, was recovered and is now in Venice where it is worshipped in the church San Marziale. A chapel was built on the spot that the miracle took place, on Covignano Hill and was later expanded to form the 16th Century church.
